New York State Forensic League

September/October 2006

Welcome Back

We hope your new year has begun well.  Now that the year is in full swing, we would like to inform you of some important points:

1) 2007 State Championship Tournament

Once again, our tournament was a great success.  Thanks to all involved.  Special thanks to Mr. Jeff Weltz and the entire Albany School district for their hospitality.

2) 2008 State Championship Tournament

The 2008 State Championship Tournament will be held on April 4-5.  We are working out locations for the tournament.  When we have confirmed this, we will announce it on the website.

3) Junior Varsity Public Forum

This year, as we announced last year, we are introducing Junior Varsity Public Forum to the State Tournament.  Eligibility for JV Public Forum is the same as eligibility in JV Extemp and JV OI.  Students must be freshmen or sophomores, but may be in their second year of forensics competition.  If either student on a Public Forum team is a junior or senior, the team must compete on the Varsity level.

Just like Varsity Public Forum, teams may qualify with a single qualification.

4) Registration

Please register at www.nysfl.org.  On that page, you will find a link to registration.  We will send an invoice to the coach's email address.  Dues for the year are $30 before Dec. 1st and $130 after that date.  Schools must be registered and paid one week in advance to enter the Regional Qualifying Tournament.  Regional Directors will be given updates on the status of their member schools.  You may check your school's status at our website.

Two years ago, we changed the address to which checks must be sent.  All checks must be sent to:

New York State Forensic League

PO Box 324

Mineola, NY 11501

Some schools have not updated the address for a few years.  Checks have been sent to Christian Brothers Academy in Albany and to St. Joseph Hill Academy in Staten Island.  You will not be registered until your check is received in Mineola.  Please be sure that your finance office has the correct address.  It is not the responsibility of either Sr. Raimonde or Alicia Slavis to forward these check to Bro. John.

We have received forms from some school districts to be filled out before payment will be sent.  Please realize that the NYSFL will NOT fill out any of these forms.  We do not wish to become entangled in the bureaucracy that these forms entail.  If your school will not send payment without these forms, you will be unable to compete at the State Tournament.

5) Prequalifications

This year, in order to simplify our registration process, we have opened registration at www.tabroom.com now.  When you register, you must list the two tournaments at which your students received half-qualifications.  The Regional Directors will be able to monitor this throughout the year.  Therefore, we will not need to send out prequalification sheets to all coaches in February.

We look forward to an excellent year.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any information.
